Moderator: Ben Mays, Hereford Litigation, UK

Ben Mays is a partner at Hereford Litigation, a privately-owned litigation and insolvency third party funder.  Ben’s remit at Hereford includes the funding of high value, complex cross-border insolvency cases.    

Ben has 24 years’ experience as a litigation and insolvency lawyer, and was described by Chambers Global as “an outstanding strategic thinker with a great tactical mind”. Ben spent the first six years of his career with Travers Smith in London. He moved offshore in 2003 where he worked with the leading offshore firms of Maples in the Cayman Islands and the BVI, and subsequently Carey Olsen where he set up and ran that firm’s successful and highly regarded BVI litigation and insolvency team.  Ben has been involved in many of the most high-profile and complex insolvencies and disputes in the Cayman Islands and the BVI. He is an experienced advocate having appeared regularly at first instance and Court of Appeal in both the BVI and Cayman.   

Sunny Hathiramani, Tanner De Witt, Hong Kong

Sunny Hathiramani first joined Tanner De Witt as a paralegal in 2008. He completed his Postgraduate Certificate in Laws from the City University of Hong Kong in 2010 and rejoined Tanner De Witt as a trainee solicitor shortly after. Sunny was admitted as a solicitor in Hong Kong in 2012 and was made Partner in 2019. 

Sunny has extensive experience in advising on a range of insolvency and restructuring issues, in relation to both companies and individuals. He has represented clients in complex commercial, winding-up and bankruptcy disputes, advising insolvency practitioners, shareholders, creditors and debtors, including in respect of cross-border issues. 

Sunny also advises and represents directors and companies in regulatory matters, including investigations by the Securities and Futures Commission and the Confederation of Insurance Brokers Disciplinary Committee. 

Sunny holds a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences from King’s College London and attained his Graduate Diploma in Law from BPP Law School, London. 

Steve Jones, Gallagher, UK

As Joint Practice Head of the Dispute Resolution Practice Steve’s primary role involves working with law firms and litigation funders to achieve insurance solutions for their clients varied requirements in complex litigation and international arbitration. He can arrange this on a case-by-case basis, for a portfolio of similar matters or through the development of a bespoke facility arrangement for firms with a varied litigation practice. 

Steve was formerly a barrister’s clerk at several well-known London Chambers before becoming Head of Dispute Resolution at Riverview Law. Since joining Gallagher in 2014 Steve has become regarded as one of the key litigation insurance brokers globally and has developed a number of innovative solutions including Arbitration Award Default insurance and Judgment Preservation insurance. 

His practice is varied and has a large international element servicing clients in the UK, USA and the Caribbean as well as acting as the account chairman for the world’s largest listed litigation funder who’s headquarters are in Perth, Australia. 

Jason Kardachi, Kroll, Singapore

Jason has led and managed complex debt restructurings and turnarounds, liquidations and receiverships and provided practical and commercial solutions to key stakeholders. 

Jason is the founding member of the TMA Southeast Asia ("SEA") chapter and is the first President of the regional TMA chapter. He was recently awarded the TMA International Chapter Impact Award 2019, and is the first practitioner outside of the United States to have received an Individual award since the launch of the TMA Awards in 1993. 

Before joining Borrelli Walsh (now Kroll), Jason was a Managing Partner of Teak Capital Partners, an advisory and investment firm focused on special situation and distressed investments across Asia Pacific. 

Jason has 26 years of corporate advisory and restructuring experience in Asia Pacific, the last 19 of which have been in Hong Kong and Singapore, initially at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Business Recovery Services and then as Head of Special Situations Asia at HSBC. 

Jason is a Chartered Accountant and has a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Adelaide. 

Daniela Raz, Omni Bridgeway, USA

Daniela Raz is an Investment Manager and Legal Counsel at Omni Bridgeway's New York office. 

Prior to joining Omni Bridgeway, Daniela was a partner with the litigation-only firm Kasowitz Benson Torres LLP, where she represented primarily plaintiffs in a wide range of complex commercial matters. She then was General Counsel and Chief Operating Officer for LightRay Companies LLC, a distressed asset investor. Daniela is also a member of our Latin America Group, contributing to Omni Bridgeway’s commercial arbitration, litigation funding and judgment enforcement efforts in Latin America. 
 
Daniela's experience both in-house and as a litigator enable her to assess investment opportunities and advise parties using Omni Bridgeway's funding with practical business judgment, well-honed negotiation and trial skills, and an ability to weigh nuanced factors when making decisions involving risk. 
 
Daniela earned her J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley's law school and received her B.A., magna cum laude, from Harvard College. She served as a law clerk to the Honorable I. Leo Glasser of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York and was a Marvin M. Karpatkin fellow at the American Civil Liberties Union. She is admitted to practice law in New York and California and is a native speaker of Hebrew and Spanish. Daniela is also recognized in LawDragon Global Restructuring Advisors & Consultants Guide (2020).
