Thursday 3 March
International Dispute Funding in Latin America

International dispute funding is a growing industry throughout Latin America.  Law firms and claimants are increasingly considering the use of funding to enable claims that would otherwise be left un-pursued.  Insolvency-related funding is at the centre of this growth, as insolvency estates seek funding to pursue claims against recipients of pre-insolvency transfers, or claims of mis-management or self-dealing.  Cross-border arbitration involving one or more Latin American entities is also a growth area for dispute funding, as is the cross-border enforcement/collection of awards and judgments.  Leading legal advisors from Sao Paulo to Mexico City are increasingly familiar with dispute funding, and they are helping their clients access it in the right cases.
This webinar will explore regional practitioners’ use of dispute funding, the benefits, the friction points, and the steps for maximising claim values via dispute funding.

Thursday 10 March
Sovereign Debt in Latin America—will it weather the COVID economic storm?

The ‘Coronacrash’ has not only affected businesses and individuals all around the world but also – and in a very harsh manner- countries and other sovereign debtors.
The IMF has recently made public that 60% of low-income countries were in or at high risk of debt distress and would find it increasingly difficult to service their debts encouraging the Group of 20 countries to step up their efforts to help low-income countries deal with high levels of debt. The IMF also suggested that the G20 Common Framework needed to be revamped to deliver debt-restructuring agreements more quickly.
The World Bank has also repeatedly warned of an increasing default risk for developing countries.
This webinar will analyse the critical situation of several Sovereign Debtors in the region and how they dealt (or are dealing) with their own debt restructurings.

Thursday 17 March
Looking North?  Latin American debtors continue to seek protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Courts

After the Latin American-based airlines (Avianca, LatAm, and Aeroméxico) filed for Chapter 11 protection in 2021, several other sizeable Chapter 11 cases were filed in 2022, including Alto Maipo, Grupo Posadas, and Alpha Credit (Colombia Operations).  Our distinguished panel will: (i) provide an update to the airline cases, (ii) explore the merits and challenges of a Chapter 11 filing for a company with operations predominantly, if not exclusively, outside of the United States and (iii) our financial advisors and principal investors will discuss investing in these reorganising companies.
